Prediction on China's coal reserves refuted

www.chinanews.cn 2005-07-22 14:10:15

Chinanews, Beijing, July 21 (By Yu Jingbo) - Zhang Xiaoqiang, deputy
director of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), does
not agree with the remark that "China's coal resources can support only
40 years of consumption" made by some experts of the industry. He stated
on today's national coal work conference that China's proven coal
reserves amounts to one trillion tons. Providing that China's annual
consumption reaches two billion tons, the nation can depend on coal as
major energy for quite a long period.
Zhang did not avoid mentioning that according to the result of intensive,
general and detailed exploration, China is still largely short of coal
resources at present. Based on intensive exploration, coal reserves
available to large and medium coal mines are only about 30 billion tons.
It is estimated that by 2010 China's coal reserve shortage based on
intensive exploration will reach 50 billion tons and jump to 125 billion
tons by 2020.
As a main component of China's primary energy, coal consumption accounted
for 67% of China's total energy consumption last year. In order to
provide stable coal supply for the development of the national economy,
China will strengthen geological exploration to guarantee 100 to 120
billion ton coal reserves based on intensive exploration by 2010 and 150
to 170 billion tons by 2020.

China's CNOOC eyes higher Unocal bid - FT

(Source: China Daily)

BEIJING, July 14 - China's CNOOC Ltd will consider raising its 18.5
billion USD takeover bid for U.S. oil producer Unocal, the Financial
Times reported on Wednesday citing people familiar with the matter.
The paper said CNOOC's board was expected to approve changes to the bid,
including giving management permission to raise the takeover offer above
the 67 USD per share in cash already offered. CNOOC's bid tops a 16
billion USD offer from Chevron Corp, although it faces numerous
regulatory and political hurdles.
Investor and analysts expect that Unocal will press Chevron to lift its
offer or risk losing its support for the deal. The Unocal board is due to
meet this week to discuss the takeover offers.

Kunming City staged a large-scale aquatic landscape singing and dancing
feast called "blessed and treasure land" on the evening of April 29.
China's first indoor aquatic theater which covers an area of over 1,000
square meters was set up in front of the banquet hall that can
accommodate more than 1,000 people. Through grand singing and dancing
performances, acrobatics and an atmosphere of modern sound and light, the
"feast" comprehensively displays the unique historical connotation and
cultural deposit of Kunming and is a large-scale dancing poem of Yunnan
Province that uncovers lifestyle, culture and folk customs. While
enjoying delicious food and wine at the banquet hall, tourists can
appreciate landscape performances given on the aquatic stage.

Fresh vegetables vie to be shown on Olympic menu

www.chinanews.cn 2006-04-27 18:27:07

Chinanews, Apr. 27 C The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Agriculture
recently picked out more than 200 types of vegetables from various
countries and recommended them to the Beijing Organizing Committee for
the XXIX Olympic Games, or BOCOG, hoping that these vegetables could be
shown on the menus when the city hosts the Olympic Games in 2008.
"We choose vegetables that are considered native in the countries where
they grow so that they can meet the tastes of different people including
athletes, coaches, journalists, and tourists from around the world," said
an official of the bureau.
The official said most of the vegetables recommended by them were
available in local markets. If any kind of these vegetables is chosen by
BOCOG for the Olympic Games, they will allocate more lands to grow it.
For those that are chosen by BOCOG and yet not available in Beijing, the
local agricultural bureau will raise them in large quantities in the
future.
In addition to some common vegetables, some edible wild herbs, such as
dandelion, shepherd's purse, and purslane, are expected to be included on
the Olympic Games table. These wild herbs are usually considered
nutritious and have medical functions, and will be served as cold dish
starters. Some vegetables, which are normally used in foreign countries
to enhance food flavor, might also appear during the Olympic Games. While
in China people usually use scallion, ginger, and garlic to enhance food
flavor, in Europe, for example, people might slice peppermint leaves into
bits and scatter them in cold dishes or salads. The peppermint leaves can
not only enhance food flavor but they have a cooling effect as well. The
Beijing Municipal Bureau of Agriculture has included exotic vegetable,
such as peppermint leaves in their recommendation list, hoping that more
people in Beijing and across the country will get to know these exotic
vegetables and their cooking methods when the Olympic Games are held.
