2005. (AP)

BAGHDAD, Oct. 19 - The first session of former Iraqi president Saddam
Hussein's trial ended Wednesday afternoon after judge ordered adjournment
until Nov. 28.
At least one international legal watchdog welcomed the adjournment by
Judge Rizgar Mohammed Amin as a sign of fairness to a defense that
complained it had insufficient time to prepare for a case centring on the
killing of 148 Shi'ite Muslim men after a failed assassination attempt in
1982.
Saddam himself insisted he was still head of state. He and his seven
aides all pleaded not guilty.
The trial began shortly after 12:00 p.m. (0900 GMT), two hours after the
scheduled time.

Strong progress in IPR protection campaign

www.chinanews.cn 2005-09-08 08:40:21

(Source: China Daily)

XIAMEN, Sept. 8 - China's specialized campaign to enforce intellectual
property rights laws has been extremely successful, government officials
said yesterday at the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation)
High-level Symposium on IPR.
Ma Enzhong, deputy secretary-general of the State Office of Intellectual
Property Protection, said that since last September, nine criminal and
administrative enforcement departments have acted together in a
nationwide crackdown on piracy, counterfeits, and trademark and patent
infringements.
In the past 12 months, industry and commerce departments on all levels
have investigated and dealt with 24,189 trademark infringement cases and
imposed fines totalling 157 million yuan (US$19.36 million), Ma said.
Copyright and cultural agencies have seized more than 167 million pirated
products, destroyed 24 assembly lines for illegal disc production and
shut down more than 2,960 illegal printing operations, he said.
Ma went on to say that patent offices have investigated and dealt with
1,115 instances of imitating patents and 153 instances of counterfeiting
patents.
Customs authorities have investigated and dealt with 949 IPR infringement
cases of imported and exported goods with a value of 73 million yuan
(US$9 million), he added.
Public security units have resolved 1,300 IPR infringement cases
involving merchandise valued at 1 billion yuan (US$123.30 million) and
have arrested 3,000 criminal suspects, he said.

Employees born in the 80s the least dedicated

www.chinanews.cn 2005-11-07 14:48:00

Chinanews, Nov. 7 - A survey report on the dedication index of Chinese
employees developed by China Human Resources Development Network
(ChinaHRD) indicates that compared with employees of other age brackets,
those born in the 1980s are the least dedicated to their work although
they are quite new in the career arena. The survey commenced on August 22
this year, concluded on September 14 and collected 3,400 valid
questionnaires.
ChinaHRD training and development department's director Bao Minggang was
in charge of this survey. He believes that low dedication index of the
1980s generation attributes to their personal characters. For instance,
they are more convinced than people of other age brackets that they have
no opportunities to do what they are most accomplished in; they want more
encouragement and acknowledgement at work but never feel they get
adequate positive feedbacks; they are quite new in the career arena but
are yearning for recognition by their leaders; once they think they do
not weigh, they suffer from tremendous sense of frustration; they are
more self-aware than being identified with the companies they work in and
their value and missions.
"Things are becoming worse every year. Besides incapability, some are
quite lazy and just turn a blind eye on work," grumbled a Mr. Zuo who is
in charge of recruitment of a company. He has much to complain about the
newly-recruited college graduates in the company. The low dedication
index of these new employees seems to attribute to personal factors;
however, social factors have an even greater bearing on this phenomenon.
As the overall employment environment intensifies, the 1980s generation
face more employment pressure and fewer choices, which will result in
blindness in their job hunting. As an interviewee said, when one is doing
something he does not like, dedication is too much to expect.

Forex reserves growth rate easing

www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-17 13:55:11

Chinanews, Oct. 17 - According to reports from the National Business
Daily, China's forex reserves have grown at a lower rate in September. On
October 14, the Central Bank of China's 3rd quarter 2005 financial
statistics show that in September, the nation's forex reserves increased
by US$15.8 billion, the smallest increase since January this year.
Compared to the same period last year, this year's September increase in
forex reserves was US$2.6 billion smaller. Up to the end of September,
China's total forex reserves were US$769 billion, rising 49.5% year on
year. In the first three quarters of this year, China's reserves
increased US$159.1 billion, US$47.8 billion more than the same period
last year.
Standard Chartered Bank senior global research analyst Stephen Green
pointed out in his report on the 14th that there is another reason for
the slower growth in forex reserves in September and means that the trend
of "hot money" flowing into China may still be accelerating.
Green explained that during September both the Yen and Euro depreciated
by about 5% versus the U.S. dollar and since about 30% of China's forex
reserves consist of the two non-dollar currencies, that means out of
China's total reserves of US$753 billion, about US$226 billion are held
in Euro and Yen assets, according to statistics from the State
Administration of Foreign Exchange's August figures. After the Euro and
Yen depreciated in September, China's forex reserves lost about US$11
billion in value. Up through September, the total forex reserves are
US$769 billion, meaning that a net inflow of US$27 billion took place
during the month, much larger than the comparable US$15.8 billion figure
for August.
Green said that considering the factor of Yen and Euro depreciating, the
inflow of foreign exchange into China is still growing at last year's
rate of 50% or more.
