People were performing east Hebei Yangko dance (a rural folk dance in
North China) in the street of Hebei's Luannan County on Feb. 5. Yangko
dance during the Spring Festival is one of the local customs. People
dress themselves in fancy clothes, pick up various types of props, act as
different characters, and dance to the festive drum beats and cheerful
beats of Suona (a Chinese woodwind instrument), creating a peaceful
atmosphere for the Chinese New Year and starting a new life.

HK Disneyland apologizes to guests for inconvenience

www.chinanews.cn 2006-02-04 10:03:06

(Source: Xinhuanet)

HONG KONG, Feb. 4 - Hong Kong Disneyland on Friday once again apologized
to guests who had unpleasant experiences in the past few days.
Bill Ernest, executive vice president and managing director of Hong Kong
Disneyland made the apology in a written statement to the press on Friday.
He said, "Once again, we apologize to any guests who were inconvenienced
and we appreciate their continued support."
This is HK Disneyland's first year of operations during Lunar New Year
and the staff members were extremely busy, he said.
Ernest admitted that "frankly, we are experiencing an unprecedented
demand at the park. In particular, the influx of visitors from the
Chinese mainland has been enormous." He emphasized that "this has been a
true learning experience for us."
He said the park always anticipated the fluctuations during the key
periods, "but this has been extraordinary in determining the designated
special days." He said really is that visitation to Hong Kong fell short
of predictions during the Lunar New Year or the current "golden week".
The park will review the need for more designated special days in the
future, he added.
Tickets to Hong Kong Disneyland have been sold out for five consecutive
days from Jan. 30 and quite a number of passengers with tickets valid for
180 days were refused for entry into the park in the past two days.
The park opened at 8:30 on Friday and its usual opening hour is at 10:00.
The park has temporarily suspended the Internet selling of tickets in
order to control the daily passenger flow.
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government has urged the
theme park to improve its ticketing management and nearly all local media
agencies have called on the park to treat its passengers kindly in an
effort to maintain Hong Kong's image as a good tourism destination.

China has first-class software talents

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-23 14:00:14

Chinanews, Beijing, Jan. 23 (By Zhu Daqiang) - Referring to the first
Google Code Jam China, a programming competition, which just closed in
Beijing, Dr. Kai-Fu Lee, Google Vice President and President of Google
China, was quite excited. He said that all the contestants were
excellent, among whom some individuals were graded 1,000, which was a
top-notch level. China's top-grade level will become international, and
the nation will turn into a software power in the world.
Lee made the above comments during an interview at Beijing Laffitte
Chateau Hotel, the venue for the Google Code Jam China Final. The
two-month Google programming contest saw a satisfactory ending, and Huang
Huan, a postgraduate of Wuhan University of Technology, finally became
the Google Code Jam China laureate after several rounds of painstaking
fights.
This is the third Google Code Jam in the globe and the first in China.
Lee indicated that it is a contest of internationally high level both in
organization and contestants. Organizers were in high spirits to see
plenty of top-class programming talents in China actively participate in
this event.
It requires genius, enthusiasm and ceaseless endeavor in the successful
cultivation and training of software talents, according to Lee. China
enjoys better environment and opportunities for software development
nowadays. Provided necessary environment for its software developers to
stimulate their initiatives, China will definitely be able to cultivate
the best, ingenious software professionals in the world.

CNOOC taps into Nigerian resources

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-10 08:52:53

(Source: China Daily)

A woman walks past the headquarters of the state-run energy firm China
National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) in Beijing, in June 2005.
China's largest gas and oil producer CNOOC said it had agreed to buy a 45
percent stake in an oil block off the coast of Nigeria for almost 2.3
billion dollars. [AFP]

Jan.10 - The nation's biggest offshore oil producer, China National
Offshore Oil Corp (CNOOC) Limited, will pay US$2.3 billion for a stake in
a Nigerian oil and gasfield.
Hong Kong-listed CNOOC yesterday announced it had signed a definitive
agreement with South Atlantic Petroleum Ltd to acquire a 45 per cent
working interest in an offshore oil mining license OML 130 in the African
country.
The purchase will be funded by internal resources of CNOOC, the company
said in a statement.
Earlier yesterday, CNOOC had requested its stock to be suspended from
trading on the Hong Kong stock exchange pending an announcement of a
"disclosable transaction." The stock finished at HK$5.40 on Friday,
having risen nearly 5 percent in the past three months.
The transaction is expected to close in the first half of this year, and
requires the approval from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corp (NNPC)
and the Chinese Government, CNOOC said.
The block, operated by global oil company Total, contains the Akpo
deepwater field, which is set to come on-stream in the second half of
2008. CNOOC said it would contribute capital expenditure of more than
US$2 billion to develop the field.
The Akpo field, about 200 kilometres off the coast of Port Harcourt, will
pump 225,000 barrels a day of oil equivalent after 2008, or 9 per cent of
Nigeria's current production, according to operator Total SA.
When production peaks, likely in 2009, CNOOC's light oil entitlement from
the block will be nearly 79,000 barrels a day, said Yang Hua, CNOOC's
chief financial officer, during a conference call.
"The purchase of this interest in OML 130 helps CNOOC gain access to an
oil and gas field of huge interest and upside potential, located in one
of the world's largest oil and gas basins," said Fu Chengyu, chairman and
chief executive of the Beijing-based offshore oil producer.
"The acquisition is in line with our goal of creating shareholder value,
and it will add to our production targets and is within our pricing
range," Yang told reporters. "Before the Akpo field starts production in
the first half of 2008 we'll have a very small dilution in earnings per
share. But after that, it will be one of the factors boosting earnings,"
Yang said.
CNOOC said it is paying US$4.60 per barrel of oil equivalent (BOE) for
the main part of its Nigeria acquisition. "It is obviously a very
attractive price," Yang said.
CNOOC was a leading contender among several bidders for the asset,
sources said.
India's government blocked Oil and Natural Gas Corp's bid for a reported
45 percent stake in the field last month because of unspecified risks.
The Nigeria move marks another overseas thrust by CNOOC to secure
overseas reserves. CNOOC, which has made a string of overseas
acquisitions in countries including Indonesia and Australia, lost out in
a US$18.5 billion cash bid for Unocal last summer to US giant Chevron.
Gordon Kwan, director of China Oil and Gas Research with Hong Kong-based
CLSA brokerage, said the rationale to acquire overseas reserves is to
diversify risk, for oil and gas, and seize opportunities that could
provide operational synergies with existing projects, while minimizing
independent exploration risks.
"With potential gross recoverable reserves that could surpass 1 billion
barrels, the OML filed is one of the world's giant oil discoveries. The
deal will allow CNOOC to gain deepwater expertise that could be applied
back in offshore China," Kwan said in an e-mail statement to customers.
South Atlantic's stake in the Akpo field was formally put up for sale
last September. The field needs billions of dollars of investment.
Other partners in the field are Nigerian National Petroleum Corp and
Petrobras.
Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil producer and the world's eighth-largest
oil exporter, producing 2.4 million barrels per day.

Thursday targeting white-collar workers. (Photo: Shanghai Daily)

Dec. 1 - One way to mark World AIDS Day Thursday would be to wander over
to Yuyuan Road near the Jing'an Temple for a meal at the city's first
AIDS-themed restaurant.
The Chinese eatery, which was set up by a local media firm and a US
multinational, will give away condoms to adult dinners and encourage
customers to donate their change to AIDS charities.
The restaurant, named Wumizhou, will open on Thursday targeting
white-collar workers, according to officials with the Wumizhou Group.
"Following the precedence of an AIDS eatery in Thailand, this theme
restaurant in Shanghai was launched by the Wumizhou Group and US-based 3M
to wipe out prejudice, distribute condoms, promote education and sponsor
AIDS charities," said Fang Yifang, an official in charge of local AIDS
charity programs.
The Shanghai Health Bureau announced on Wednesday that the city has
detected 1,506 HIV carriers since it began screening for the disease
about 10 years ago, including 164 people with full-blown AIDS.

Nation to moderate high-speed economic growth

www.chinanews.cn 2005-11-30 10:54:14

(Source: Xinhua)

Nov. 30 - The growth rate of China's economy is expected to lower to 6.7
percent next year, said Morgan Stanley economist Stephen Roach recently
at Beijing University.
"Although the estimation may be too conservative, the downward trend of
China's economic growth is certain to come," he said.
Many Chinese and overseas economists have reached consensus on the
upcoming slowdown of China's economic growth.
In the past few years, the rocketing export has become a robust driving
force of China's economy, but in the near future, due to increasing trade
disputes and international trade protectionism, the country will not be
able to maintain a high-speed export growth.
Besides, China's macro-control policies have successfully decelerated the
country's overheated investment growth, so economists believe the Chinese
economy will enter a new stage characterized by stable rather than
high-speed growth.
In 2003 and 2004, China's annual economic growth rate was 9.5 percent,
and in the first three quarters this year, the figure was9.4 percent.
The National Bureau of Statistics expected Chinese economy to grow at an
rate between 8.7 to 9.2 percent next year, and in the next five years,
the country's economy is expected to rise at an average rate of 8 percent.
Since China started its reform and opening-up policy more than 20 years
ago, its economy has "overheated" or "overcooled" several times.
After some years of rapid economic growth of more than 9 percent, China
is trying to restructure its economy by putting more emphasis on quality,
rather than quantity.
Economists agree that the Chinese economy now faces two major problems,
namely excessive dependence upon its exports and oversupply in some
industries due to excessive investment.
The restructure policy will cool down China's booming economy, but it is
unlikely for the economy to slump in the near future, because both
exports and investment will maintain moderate growth, and the government
will make more efforts to stimulate domestic consumption.
2006 may be a starting point for the country to overhaul its economy
through discouraging overheated investment and stimulating consumption,
said Wang Xiaoguang, a researcher with the State Development and Reform
Commission.
The seasonal adjustment of the Chinese economy is not equal to economic
recession in western countries, Wang said. The Chinese economy will
continue to rise next year, with a growth rate slowing down to a moderate
level, he said.
According to China's next five-year plan, the per capita gross domestic
product in 2010 is expected to double from that in 2000, which means
China has to maintain its annual economic growth above7.5 percent.
The Chinese government, having adopted the concept of sustainable
development, is now paying more attention to quality and efficiency in
economic development, and regards stable and balanced growth as ideal.
