Chinese language - Fresh vegetables vie to be shown on Olympic menu

Fresh vegetables vie to be shown on Olympic menu

Chinanews, Apr. 27 �C The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Agriculture
recently picked out more than 200 types of vegetables from various
countries and recommended them to the Beijing Organizing Committee for
the XXIX Olympic Games, or BOCOG, hoping that these vegetables could be
shown on the menus when the city hosts the Olympic Games in 2008.
"We choose vegetables that are considered native in the countries where
they grow so that they can meet the tastes of different people including
athletes, coaches, journalists, and tourists from around the world," said
an official of the bureau.
The official said most of the vegetables recommended by them were
available in local markets. If any kind of these vegetables is chosen by
BOCOG for the Olympic Games, they will allocate more lands to grow it.
For those that are chosen by BOCOG and yet not available in Beijing, the
local agricultural bureau will raise them in large quantities in the
future.
In addition to some common vegetables, some edible wild herbs, such as
dandelion, shepherd's purse, and purslane, are expected to be included on
the Olympic Games table. These wild herbs are usually considered
nutritious and have medical functions, and will be served as cold dish
starters. Some vegetables, which are normally used in foreign countries
to enhance food flavor, might also appear during the Olympic Games. While
in China people usually use scallion, ginger, and garlic to enhance food
flavor, in Europe, for example, people might slice peppermint leaves into
bits and scatter them in cold dishes or salads. The peppermint leaves can
not only enhance food flavor but they have a cooling effect as well. The
Beijing Municipal Bureau of Agriculture has included exotic vegetable,
such as peppermint leaves in their recommendation list, hoping that more
people in Beijing and across the country will get to know these exotic
vegetables and their cooking methods when the Olympic Games are held.
